The Army Family Action Plan (AFAP)

is an Army-wide program put in place to improve Army quality of life. Through AFAP, all members of the Army, including active, Reserve, and National Guard Soldiers, retirees, surviving spouses, DA civilians and their Family members have a forum to voice concerns to Army leadership and make recommendations for change.
AFAP issues have been responsible for literally hundreds of legislative, regulatory and policy changes involving the Army and geared towards improving the quality of Army life and enhancing readiness and retention.
Among the changes benefiting all Army services that have come through AFAP are pay increases, dental benefits, TRICARE reform, life insurance, housing allowances, and enhanced educational opportunities.
Do you have suggestions for Army leadership which could improve well-being for you and your Family? Please contact the AFAP Program Manager at 253-967-3689 or visit our office in building 2166, corner of 12th and Liggett Avenue or email us at LEWISAFTB@conus.army.mil.
The local AFAP process is made up of delegates from all over the installation, including all members of the Army Family — active duty, Reserve, DA civilians, Family members and retirees. All their input and experience goes into working the issues and finding resolutions.
Although some issues take time or are proven unattainable, every issue is reviewed, monitored, and tracked until a resolution is found. About 90% of AFAP issues are retained and worked at a local level, resulting in ongoing community improvements. Issues beyond the scope of Joint Base Lewis-McChord are forwarded to a higher level of authority.
Make a difference, get involved!
If you are a Soldier, retiree, surviving spouse, DA civilian, or Family member — active, Guard or Reserve — you can be part of the AFAP process. If you are a commander, you can support a strong AFAP program in your community, and you can draw on the real-time quality of life information AFAP provides.
Volunteer to help with a conference, assist with the program, or be a member of the local AFAP Advisory Committee.

Army Family Team Building (AFTB)

is a Family training and readiness program that provides participants with an understanding of Army culture and the skills and resources you need to become a self-reliant, self-sufficient member of the military community.
AFTB teaches Soldiers that the more informed their spouses are about the military, the better their chances for a successful career. Soldiers confident in the self-reliance of their Families are more ready to fulfill their tactical mission.  Standardized, sequential AFTB training provides Family members with the information, knowledge and skills to gain that self-reliance.
Your Joint Base Lewis-McChord AFTB is an all-volunteer led organization, designed and developed by the very people it is intended to serve.
The types of positions held by our Joint Base Lewis-McChord AFTB volunteer staff include office staff, support staff, briefers and instructors. We have positions open that will fit most schedules, and all training is provided. Our volunteer program includes a Volunteer of the Month and a Volunteer Team of the Quarter award. Small incentives, such as pins, pens and mugs are given for specific numbers of hours volunteered. Bonus Bucks are symbolic points earned by volunteers for teaching, briefing, mentoring and performing office duties. AFTB volunteers are also recognized by the I CORPS Commander at a Volunteer Appreciation Dinner every year.
Our volunteers are kept informed of all the happenings at AFTB through a monthly newsletter. AFTB volunteers meet for a fun activity once a month such as bowling, skating, dinner, pumpkin patch & corn maze, cleaning toys at Santa's Castle, and holiday meals.
The AFTB program offers many opportunities that include:

  • Free monthly scheduled classes, great life skills training, opportunity to make new friends, networking opportunities,
  • Funded on-site childcare, off-site unit classes, classes offered in English, Spanish, and Korean, and, of course, the opportunity for fun!

AFTB training is organized into three levels and is taught through interactive classes:

  • Level I Basic
  • Level II
  • Level III

Instructor training prepares Family members, Soldiers and civilians to become an effective AFTB instructor. No prior teaching experience is necessary — AFTB instructor training will give you all the basic skills you need to be an AFTB instructor. Instructor training classes include the Planning Process, Speaking on Your Feet, Methods of Instruction, and Instructional Aids.
For more information on volunteer opportunities and to sign up for classes, call or visit our office in building 2166, corner of 12th and Liggett Avenue or call 253-967-2382.
If you are unable to participate in AFTB classes at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, AFTB classes are online at
AFTB classes at Army One Source.
