Family Readiness Groups & Key Spouses

Army Family Readiness Groups and Air Force Key Spouses are command-sponsored programs to help build strong Families and bridge the gap between Families and units.

What is a Family Readiness Group (FRG)?

  • A community link between military and Families.
  • A valuable referral source about community resources.
  • A base of caring and sharing especially during separation (deployment).
  • Provides special events and programs.
  • Encourages social interaction among Family members.
  • Educates the military and Families on pertinent topics (preparing for deployment, parenting tips, stress management, sports skills, etc.).
  • What is a Key Spouse?

  • Key Spouses are volunteer military spouses from within your unit who are trained and appointed by the unit commander.
  • They perform a vital communication role between unit leadership and its Families. 
  • Key Spouses provide support to the Families of military members during times of need. 
  • Key Spouses assist Families in finding available base & community resources to utilize.
  • Every Air Force unit on JBLM has at least one Key Spouse.

    What can I expect of my FRG?

  • Connect you to community information, volunteer opportunities and referral services.
  • Help your Family prepare for separation due to deployment or extended field exercises.
  • To meet people who have a common bond and make new friends and to be with others who understand the Army lifestyle.
  • Listen when you need to talk and be non-judgmental.
  • Provide a Peer-to-Peer support system on handling military life experiences.
  • Serve as a vital link in exchanging information between unit leadership and your Families.
  • What can I expect of my Key Spouse?

    How can I contact my FRG?

  • Ask your spouse or someone in your spouse’s unit.
  • Contact the Unit or the Family Readiness Support Assistant (FRSA).
  • Ensure that your unit FRG roster contains your current mailing address and telephone number.
  • How can I contact my Key Spouse?

  • The Key Spouse Centralized Voicemail System.  The system will allow contact with unit Key Spouses thru a virtual mailbox system.  The call-in number to access this is (253) 982-5397 or (253) 982-KEYS. 
  • Contact your unit First Sergeant or call AFCS - McChord at (253) 982-2695.

    FRGs are always looking for great volunteers to fill positions.  Ask the Commander, First Sergeant or FRG leader where you can help. It’s as simple as that!
